John Whiteman Reports
Bonhams had an important sale of Sports, Competition and Collectors cars at the Goodwood Members’ Meeting with the ‘cover star’ of the catalogue a 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren selling for an above estimate £425,000 with only 39 recorded miles! Another featured car was a re-creation of one of the 1954 Bristol 450 Le Mans cars which competed at the Sarthe and at Reims and returned in 1955 before being recycled.
From an earlier era, a 1934 MG Q-Type Monoposto, one of eight built, and driven at Brooklands by Doreen Evans realised £103,500 and a 1936 Frazer Nash TT Rep changed hands for an above estimate £276,000. A fascinating ‘project car’ the 1952 ex-Tony Gaze Alta Racing Single Seater, a driver much associated with Goodwood, sold for an above estimate £78,200.
Delivered new to California, a 1959 Fiat-Abarth 750GT Zagato ‘Double Bubble’ Coupe found a new home for £89,700, but of the competition cars a 1953 Turner F2 failed to sell as did an ex-works 1959 Austin-Healey 3000 MkI rallied by the famous Donald and Erle Morley.
