Stop Press - Important Information

Update on the New Licencing Rules

In the April issue we wrote about the new licencing rules that apply in Europe.  At the time of going to press we had been told by an FIA official that the new rule would only apply to National licences and not International licences.  We are now being told that some organisers are asking for letters of permission even for International licences at National events, which most of our historic race meetings are, though some are not.  We did not mean to mislead you, but we thought we had our information on good authority.

We therefore suggest that even if you have an International licence, you get a letter or visa for the whole season, or whatever your ASN is able to issue, unless your licence specifically says you have permission to race abroad. Whatever happens, please make sure you have permission to race at Donington if you are not a GB licence holder, as race organisers there will be asking for them.

The bulletin issued by the British ASN explains that the FIA wording, which says, “….This authorisation shall be given by the ASN concerned in such form as they might deem convenient, by stamping the entry form, issuing the competitor and/or driver a special permit for a specific event, or a more general permit (for one or several countries, for a given period or for the whole period of validity of the licence concerned).....”.

Monza Four Hours at the Coppa Intereuropa

. .

Organiser, Jason Wright reports a lot of interest from Touring Car drivers in this new event, especially the Alfa GTAms, which is very appropriate because in 1970 they dominated the Monza 4 hour touring car race.  Although their work will be cut out to stay ahead of the BMW 2002 Tis not to mention the Escorts.  However the over 2-litre class is sure to be dominated by V8s, with the Camaros leading the challenge.  We have even heard from a driver looking to purchase a Camaro for the event!

Under Two Litres on the Nordschleife!

Organisers of the popular U2TC series, for under two litre touring cars, have been offered the rare opportunity to stage a two-hour race on the Nürburgring Nordschleife during the Oldtimer-Grand-Prix meeting. This will be a first for the cars of smaller capacity that rarely get a chance to race in a field that does not include the bigger cars. “Initial response to this has been amazing”, said series coordinator, Carol Spagg. “It’s as if the drivers have been waiting for it, so quickly did they respond with their positive feedback.”

The race, which will take place on the Friday of the Oldtimer (August 10), will not replace the traditional Marathon, but will be a stand-alone race exclusively for under two-litre cars. “Being that there is enough room for a really big grid”, said Spagg, “we will also take some selected pre-’66 under two-litre GT cars of similar performance as well. These will have their own classes and podium. But what would really be fun is if we could get a large number of the smaller cars that were such an important part of the early days of the Touring Car Championship.” She would welcome cars such as Abarth 850, 1000 TC, BMW 700 S Coupe, Steyr Puch 650 TC, Panhard 24 CT, DKW Junior, Cooper S 970, Saab 96 Sport and Hillman Imp. “Think of the fun they could have on the Nordschleife battling amongst themselves for their own class.” Contact Carol Spagg at Historic Motor Racing News on carol(at)historicmotorracingnews.com to register your interest
