Since 1958, the picturesque Wiscombe Park hillclimb – a challenging 1000-yard, two hairpin course on a private estate in East Devon – has been a favourite with speed eventers in the Southwest of England. The 2026 edition of its May Classic weekend, featuring 500 Owners’ Association and Vintage Sports-Car Club competitors wending their way through the rhododendrons to the summit on successive days, was blessed with spring sunshine, contrary to forecasts.

Saturday saw Tom Waterfield victorious among the 500s in Tim Ross’ Cooper Mk9 on 47.43s, pushed all the way by co-driver Ollie Leston on 48.68s and Hamish Cameron (Cooper-JAP Mk8) on 49.35s. Andy Turner (Cooper-JAP Mk6) won the 1100cc class with 47.70s to Ewan Cameron’s 47.96 in a similar car. Ian Baxter (Alta 61 IS) set BTD in Sunday’s VSCC event, his 46.49s final shot inspired by invitee Waterfield’s 46.62s, believed to be the quickest ascent of Wiscombe in a Norton-powered 500.
