In another, more positive, announcement, Masters has also revealed that it is launching a new class in its Masters Racing Legends series. The class will be named after Jean-Pierre Jabouille and is for Formula 1 cars powered by turbo engines. These will run alongside the DFVs. “It’s a major new chapter for Masters – and just the beginning. With more announcements to follow.”

The Masters Racing Legends series features Formula One cars from 1966–1985, divided into five classes that reflect the evolution of F1’s technology and regulations. These are:

Jackie Stewart – Formula One cars built and raced prior to 31 December 1972

Emerson Fittipaldi – Post-1972 non-ground effect Formula One cars

Patrick Head – Post-1972 ground effect Formula One cars

Niki Lauda – Post-1972 flat-bottomed Formula One cars

Jean-Pierre Jabouille (New) – Turbo engine Formula One cars (maximum 1.5L) from 1977 to 1985

The FIA banned turbo cars in Formula 1 at the end of the 1980s primarily due to concerns over excessive power levels, unpredictable power delivery, rising costs, and safety risks associated with these engines. However, with their sheer power and the intense rivalries of the period the public loved them. Watch this space or see mastershistoricracing.com for updates.
