Amongst the many themes and memorials that took place at the Goodwood Members’ Meeting, Tribute was paid James Hunt’s 1976 World Championship win over Niki Lauda 50 long years ago and his friendship with double World Champion motor cyclist Barry Sheene. Despite coming from vastly different backgrounds hell raising instincts drew them together and they both ended up commentating on their sports after retirement.

Cars were on track Saturday and there was a grid walk-about on Sunday afternoon that included examples of Hunt’s earlier Hesketh years together with championship winning McLaren M23 and other cars he raced against such as Tyrrell P34, Theodore and Fittipaldi. Alistair Caldwell from Hunt’s McLaren days was present on the grid, as were Bubbles Horsley and other personalities from Hunt’s career. In the paddock was a static display of 1976 Ferrari 312T and McLaren M23 of the type that battled it out over the long, dramatic and damaging Summer of 1976 when Formula One was from a different dangerous age but which of the gradual improvement.
