Concours with a Difference

Cavallino Classic Monaco, organised in collaboration with the Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM), the Yacht Club de Monaco and Ferrari Corse Clienti saw 22 single seaters from the glorious past of the Scuderia Ferrari lined up in the Marina in Monaco during the Grand Pric Historique for a concours d’élégance like no other. Many of the cars also did parade laps on the circuit during the weekend. The Best of Show was presented by Piero Ferrari to the F2004 owned by Luis Perez Companc, the car with which Michael Schumacher dominated the 2004 Formula 1 season, competing in Australia, Malaysia, Bahrain, Imola, and Spain.

A ‘Royale’ Parade

Amongst other parades and activities, Prince Albert II completed a ceremonial lap of the circuit in a Bugatti Type 41, better known as the Royale, to mark the car’s centenary and serve as reminder that the first Grand Prix de Monaco in 1929 was won by Grover Williams in a Bugatti. Seated in the famous Coupé Napoléon created by Jean Bugatti, he transformed a familiar track into a moving tribute to one of the most ambitious automobiles ever built.

Brought to Monaco for the occasion from the Schlumpf Collection at the Musée National de l’Automobile in Mulhouse, driving duties were entrusted to the museum’s head of workshop, while Prince Albert shared the vast cabin with Christophe Piochon, president of Bugatti Automobiles, and Michel Ferry, vice-president of the Automobile Club de Monaco. With its 13-litre straight-eight engine, weeing the huge car within the tight confines of the Monaco circuit underlined the contrast between pre-war grandeur and modern racing machinery.
