After the final Masters round at Mugello, Matthew Wrigley was crowned the new champion in the Masters Racing Legends series for 3-litre Formula One cars. The Derbyshire driver is the successor to American Ken Tyrrell who also took the title in a Tyrrell 011. Last season, Wrigley pushed Nick Padmore all the way in a tight battle for the pre-78 class title, after which he decided to swap his Penske PC3 for an ex-James Hagan Tyrrell 011 in Imola Ceramiche colours. Along with faithful mechanic Jim Simkin, Wrigley subsequently switched to Front Row Racing to prepare the car. Their cooperation resulted in no fewer than eight wins on their way to a dominant title in the Head class for 1978-82 ground-effect cars. Matt’s title comes 20 years after father Mike performed the same feat, remarkably also in a Tyrrell. Peter Williams (Lec CRP1) became the new pre-78 Fittipaldi class champion, while Jamie Constable (Tyrrell 011B) and Ewen Sergison (Surtees TS9B) lifted the post-82 Lauda class and pre-72 Stewart class spoils.
